ALTERNATOR BELT

Post by virek »

My alternator belt yesterday and today keeps on jumping off :?

Its seems to be tight enough and the pulleys run straight but as soon as I rev it abit, the belt first flips then jumps off.

Check crank end float. Your flywheel may be loose. Is your clutch making funny noises when you depress the pedal?

Hi Fig, what do mean crank end float

The clutch is not making any funny noises.

I did notice that the belt does not sink into the crankpulley properly ( hope I said that right ). Maybe the belt is too thick?

Thanks

Isn't the width of the pully groove adjustable with spacing washers?

If the belt has turned on itself then you need a new one as the one you have is now trash, get a NEW one, make sure you get the right one, there are others on the market that are close but are just too big/long for a beetle.
The belt must have about 10-15mm slack when you fit it, and should sit right inside the crank pulley, make sure the alternator pulley gets about 10 shims either inside the pulley or under the mounting washer, the pulley must not be worn or else it will make a horrible noise the 2 pin type, same as used on the old 6V gennys is crap, get the newer type, if yours shows any wearing out.

Thank you - i went out to GW and got a new good year belt. I did notice at a very low idle the crank pulley is slighty warped. But after fitting the belt, all seems fine. On the alternator pulley, there was one washer on the outside and the balance were on the inside. I assume the less washers on the inside means u can tension the belt more. The belt is just tight enough so I can half way twist it. Hope its fine now.

I think I also drive the bug too hard  Took it 140km/h quiet a few times. I wonder were the revs were @ that speed.

1st gear I stretch it to 30km/h
2nd gear - 70km/h
3rd gear - 95km/h
4th gear - 140km/h

This is when i'm really rushing. Maybe i will install a rev counter.

Thanks

your thinking about the washers is correct...

Those speeds in those gears wont make the engine last forever, but wont hurt it too much either.
Engine rpm depends on gears and tyre size. Mine used to hit 90 in 3rd at 4000 and 120 in 4th at 4000. This was a 1300 box and 195.60.15 rears... So dont worry about it.

Thanks Tony :D

195/60/15 - thats what I want to do on my bug. I am trying to get a set of wides/narrows dish rim with the BBS look.

195/60/15 at the rear and 195/50/15 in the front - should look great.

If you want BBS rims, look for the old VR6 Jettas

Yes, those rims are nice. You also get the 16inch BBS Splits from a Jetta V5, but 16 inch tyres are too expensive
If it's too low, you're too old
