Greetings,
IT seems my gearbox is not selecting so I've been told to bin the box and reduction gears and fit a more modern box
without reduction gears. I'm being told this is a simple bolt on with no real modification but this makes no real sense to
me and I dearly need some advice on this. Can a more modern gearbox fitted to a 1600 twin port motor slot into
my old 1965 bus? Will my original 15 inch rims and tyres fit?
Thank you.

Re: 1965 Split Bus German - Gearbox blues
Dont think anything else will fit without major modifications and big expense.
Baywindow gearboxes have been fitted, however major modifications are neccessary, like welding in mountings for IRS suspension and making gearbox mountings. Later type 2 gearboxes are scarce, ridiculously expensive and abused ,thanks to the Ford V6 conversion crowd.
Some people have tried the removal of the reduction boxes, and used beetle axles. This severely lowers the rear, and the rear track becomes narrower. Bus rear brakes cannot be used,as 1500 and Fleetline drums have 46mm nuts. Some used type 3 drums. Gearing will be wrong, feel like always towing a large caravan. Beetle axles may not be strong enough for a heavily loaded bus, especially on bad roads. Think it is mainly done on show vehicles overseas.
May be best and cheapest to fix what you have. First check your linkage.

Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

What is your gearbox blues
As Dawie mentioned no straight fwd swop and the bus will go lower
Linkages and the busching in the tunnel of the selector rod needs to be good there is ways to make shift a plan for the bushing
Tell us more first what the problem / S are

Re: 1965 Split Bus German - Gearbox blues
The good news is the box has started selecting so I'm hoping it's nothing terminal.
Hope to get a motor in sometime soon and then I'll know. Previously it would not
select but I'm beginning to think my mackie is a little dickie.
Appreciate all the advice now let's hope it works, seems too good to be true but
I need a foot up on this one.
Cheers
