Yes, indeed - the Type 3 (and the Type 34 Ghia) with swing axles used the same covers, and also have the same 'long' torsion bars as the 1302/1303 Beetle. The torsion bar covers I'm using are actually from a swing arm Type 3 as well.

No progress on the buggy build to date, in fact I am still in George. Wish it was this easy!

I used to know that guy very well myself. But I won't let him do it for free, so how 'bout Klipdrift-currency?

Update 20/01/2009- Some goodies fresh from the powder coaters

Just before I left for the KKK camp/George Challenge, I handed a few smaller parts in at African Powder Coating in Eastleigh to be coated in black. These were all stuff that I have cleaned thoroughly with the wirebrush, and I needed to have them covered before they start rusting (again). These are some of that lesser-seen parts, like the gearbox mounting cradle bracket, steering rod tube, tie rods and doghouse oil cooler scoop. Got them back today, individually wrapped in GladWrap, and I am happy with their work! (The whole exercise was also an experiment to see the quality of their work)

Image

A small problem, though.... does anyone know where this part fits in? (I think it is part of the engine tinware in the oil cooler area?) The screw it has fitted is only there to protect the thread from the powder coating.

As said earlier in this thread, progress (read: spending more money) on the buggy build has come to a halt in the few weeks leading to the George Challenge. Yes, it has made a bit of a dent in the budget - it was a lot of kms in a vehicle not known for its fuel economy, but I am glad I did it and it was fun all the way.

From now on, everything and anything that needs to be done on HW2, will cost money. I need to sit down this weekend and work out a budget for the build, related to projected completion dates, as well as the sequence of when what must happen (eat your heart out Trevor Manuel). I also need to take stock of what I have, what I need and what needs to be done. I'm still sticking to the projected date of mid-'09 for completion of the running chassis, hopefully I'll make it!

That part looks like the "Hoover bit". (Nothing to do with a vacuum cleaner).
Named after Bob Hoover,an American VW guy,who by the way happens to be terminally ill.
It helps to seal air around the 71-onwards doghouse oilcooler.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Thanks! I found this on the Web
In the past, most people uninformed about this essential bit of hardware simply pitched it in the trash. To assure proper sealing and anti-vibration to the upright Doghouse Oil Cooler, VW installed a small "L" shaped bracket, known and discussed on the mailing lists as the "Hoover Bit", named in honor of Bob Hoover.

Without it however, it results in a critical loss of cooling air in the fan shroud and the doghouse cooler. And we all know what happens when you lose cooling air. VW hasn't made this piece of metal for a long time and finding one in the junkyard is like finding a needle in a haystack but it isn’t impossible, that’s where I found mine. It mounts horizontally by attaching to the two mounting studs for the oil doghouse oil cooler and a screw goes through the shroud tin to the small threaded hole in the “Hoover Bit” to add rigidity.

What does a "Hoover Bit" look like?
