the reason i asked was i have front discs already and run an adapter at the back for the 4/100 alloy, the adapter causes the wheel to stick out of the wheel arch(offset issue), also adjusting drums are pain in the rear.TonyE wrote:Do the front first , that makes al the differance. I did my back a few weeks later and exept for the handbrake that realy works , braking is not that much better. The front is easy to instal. My bug is running with discs front and rear for the last 11 years problem free. The only problem i had was that the discs are a bit deeper in than a drum with a adapter so i had to put a spacer between the disc and the wheel.

Re: Disc conversions
good point bugspray but running a twin circuit master cylinder should solve that problem i think.bugspray wrote:Yeah, but I think it holds some truth. The back can lock up. And you hardly would feel it. A friend of mine had a mk1 gti, and that happend to him. Luckily the pavement broke his crash.

Since changing my master cylinder to Golf, I have had no hassles with my all round disc brakes.

Re: Disc conversions
I have managed to make up a new hub that retains the wheel position as stock in relation to the fender, the wheel no longer tucks in and reducing turning circle is something of the past, this kit is R2400 for the front. No spacer needed.

Re: Disc conversions
The reason why a mk1/2/3 for that matter would lock up the rears after disc has been fitted is that the golf run a "load sensor" between the rear axel and the body of the car this increases the brake fluid to the rear when you load the vechicle or have passengers in the back when you fit disc's you have to set the sensor (bend the retaining plate) because the pressure to the rear is to high when loaded (meaning you have to much sound in the boot or the car has been dropped) for discs compared to drums witch makes them lock up.Running discs on a acvw at the rear should not cause any of these problems.

Re: Disc conversions
Calooker, you so getting a call later! If i can Keep my current beetle 5 spoke mags and do a disc conversion then i'm willing to fork over the cash, I need discs. once my bug is up to scratch cooling, handling and braking wise i will up the engine size to 2L or at least put the big bore kit on to get to 1800.

Re: Disc conversions
Sorry to Hijack
Rui, that kit looks great,I like the fact that there is no spacer, on my 65 I had the turning circle issues you mentioned.
Just making mental notes for my next bug. Do you know what it would cost to get the calipers anodized red? Or should I just spray it red with some high temp duco ?

Re: Disc conversions
I have no idea on that fancy coating, I think you would need to strip the internals out before the process ???
One thing is for sure the caliper paint you buy over the counter ie: Autostyle, only works for a short while, and not worth the effort and money.

Re: Disc conversions
Rui is right you have to strip the calipers, the best is to have them ceramic coated but it works out to about R550- per caliper ouch !!
