[quote="Thumper"]Those things have killed people on Chapmans peak drive./quote]

Only one person has ever been killed on Chapman's Peak by a falling rock. This is a fact. Happened to be a very good friend of mine's father. A very nice old man who taught me a lot, least of which was how to find oysters, shell them, prepare them and eat them. Hailed from East London. Must be about 20 years ago already, jees, time flies...

Nevertheless... best to be avoided in this weather. Is it open? Last I looked it was closed, was all summer too...

Hmmm ... I don't know about that. I have personally read at least two news reports of people being killed by rocks falling onto their cars on Chapman's Peak Drive over the past 10 years. And a very good friend of mine also lost her father when a rock fell on his T3 microbus on CPD.

Anyway, I thought CPD was closed?

If my memory serves me correct, (and thats a problem these days) a women in a corolla died when a boulder fell on its roof. This was when they decided to revamp Chapmans.

So now we have 3 deaths. Will have to Google the subject.

From iol

(edit: From iol January 07 2000 at 04:49PM -Just in case somebody thinks this is breaking news.)

Cape Town's scenic Chapman's Peak Drive will be closed until further notice after a woman was killed and another seriously injured during a rockfall on Friday.

Lara Callige, in her mid-20s, was killed instantly while her 21-year-old sister, Olga Callige, both of Noordhoek, suffered head injuries when a 500kg rock flattened the roof of their car on the Noordhoek side of the scenic route.

Gail Ross, a spokesperson for the Constantiaberg MediClinic, said Olga Callige is in a serious condition in the intensive care unit.

Winds are ripping through everything at the moment and the temperature is around 6 degrees and the windchill factor isn't making matters better. We've had a lot of rain during the night.

Seas are also very rough and apparantly this is just the beginning.Hopefully I will be able to go show the kids the snow on the mountains this weekend that they say is going to fall.

Morning came and the damage is a not as bad as what I thought it would be, I signage board, about 3meters by 5m got blown to pieces along the route to work, there were branches in the streets, did not see any trees blown over, but I am sure it has happened somewhere around here.

The N2 was closed for a bit as rubble and builders materials landed on the freeway during the storm. All from the road works on the hospital bend.

And it still raining,

I know that the residents of the Republic of Hout Bay had a protest march on Chappies to protest the long closure of the pass.. Nothing happened.... :jerkoff:

The only time Chappies has been open was for the Argus cycle tour and then it was closed again....

For the sake of clarity, "Friday" in this story was the first Friday in January 2000.

Thanks Fig I added the date to my original Post.

Now how many people have died on Chapmans as a result of a rockfall, while traveling in a car. I can only find this case. All the rest are hikers or suicides.
