Post by Chris »

And now ladies and gents, for your exitement and pleasure, the all new Citi Golf Billabong!Comes with a free Billabong laptop backpack filled with,.............wait for it......................a beach towel, keyring and a pair of Von Zipper sunglasses!!Wow,isn't that exciting!!

It also comes with the same crappy body,30 year old styling, drives the same, looks the same and it has no modern safety futures, except for seatbelts!

And that's not all!!If you buy one now,we will even throw in the ridiculous price of R96 100!!

Now, if they were selling those for under R60k. It would be an understandable price.

But WTF!!! 96K for a mk1 golf. Are they off their rockers?

Sorry, stupid question. Yes they are!

Just another thing.

How the heck do they expect to sell any in this climate, both weather wise and economic wise.

Honestly, somebody should knock some common sense back into VW South Africa.

Price is not quite the point here Chris.

Think about it. How many people do you know that need to buy a Car right now. Take that number and subtract those who simply can't afford to buy a new car.

Out of a 100 South Africans, I'd say you would be lucky to be left with 10.

Of that 10, subtract all the guys that will need to buy something that isn't a city golf. Regardless of reason. You'll be left with about 4. Make it 5 for the sake of argument.

Of that 5, how many are actually going to buy a City Golf. Compare the price of a City Golf with that of it's competitors, the Golf just isn't value for money anymore. Guys would much rather go for a Corsa (may my !@#$ turn black for saying that), purely because it comes with more things as standard. Most people wouldn't even consider the GM insolvency as a problem when the buy it.

And that doesn't even compare to the new market entrants like GWM and CHANA, and that's if you don't even look at Toyota.

This is exactly how VWSA is going to commit suicide.

I don't know what their marketing department is smoking. But whatever it is, they need to share it with the rest of the country. We all need some "feel good" :bn: right now.

What they should be doing, is flooding the market with adverts for spares on Mark 1 golfs. They should be making it clear to the public that the MK 1 is here to stay in SA. And that Joe Blogs in the street should buy one, regardless of wither or not it's new or used.

What they should be doing is giving a discount on dealer services for every one that wants a MK 1 golf serviced. That alone will have a true drive in sales. Both new and used.

Bottom line:

They should stop selling cars to people that want status symbols and start selling cars to people that want to use the damn things for every day life.

They guys that want status symbols are so deep in dept that they can barely afford to eat, let alone buy a car.

Simple marketing. Whats usually a 1st car, yeah mk1. Who are generally 1st time buyers? Graduates, school leavers, new drivers. This target market, are brand conscies and go for pop culture, known brands. Bong is popular everywhere, thus brand recognition, vw decided to make use, and cash in, bluff poor sods with a mass made towel and kitbag, throw in bong decals, and viola instant individualism (yeah about 6000 other people individual). But hey it works. Look at how many mk1s out there...

I think I would be able to sell all you can supply me here in the US. To bad it will not meet our safety standards. But need non the less. I will rock one any day.
