The 'dolphin encounter' trip in Mocambique Teresa and I had planned for Thursday, Friday and the weekend was cancelled on Wednesday evening by the organisers, so I decided to proceed with my leave I had taken for yesterday and today, to try and spend some quality time on HW2. Installed the front disk brakes, hubs and bearings yesterday, and busy with the callipers and brake pads today... will keep you updated!

Update 25/06/09

The front disk brake assembly is completed! Strangely enough, the right calliper (bought brand new from Goldwagen) seemed to be a bit of a rougher casting on the edges, than the left calliper. I had to clean certain parts with the angle grinder and a hand file to make the brake pads fit.

Next up will be to get a brake master cylinder, brake fluid reservoir bottle and plumbing lines...

I've also got photo's of HW1 from before forum days, I think at a long gone George show, or some up country show... I thought then it was inspired by that buggy "Clockwork Orange" that was featured in Volksworld.

HW1 was inspired by this battery-operated toy buggy I've had for many years, 'Clockwork Orange' was only featured after I have change blue HW1 to whorange HW1

That is the plan, yes. I had a look at master cylinders at Goldwagen in the week, and it seems like there are two types, namely a short and a long version. The longer one of the two seemed to be the more suitable, but it has a funny 'tube' where the pin from the brake pedal is supposed to go in, guess I need to remove that first?

The reason why I don't install a standard Beetle m/c, as suggested by some Forum members, is that I want a dual stage circuit, as VW fitted to all their factory front disk brake cars.

Update:

The front disk brakes are installed, but I still need adapter plates to take the 4-bolt Golf pcd back to the wide-5 Sprintstar pcd. I am a little worried about this entire conversion, as I will be increasing the track width of the front of the buggy, which will of course have a wider turning circle as a direct result. At this stage I actually only want the front wheels not to be wider than the rear ones, but I will make a final decision right at the end of the project, when I am actually able to drive HW2. The main (read: only) reason why I opted for front disk brakes is because I HATE adjusting VW brake shoes, and now I have 50% less wheels to worry about!

I will also be using the long type for the fasty. With the drums all round for now, then front discs at a later date. Nice work so far. This is going to be a wicked buggy!

This tube is a guide for the insides of the MC it is not neccesary to cut it You must just shorten yor pushrod a bit and make it slightly thinner in the 12hoo and 6hoo position so it doesnt touch the tube be sure to get the tip nice and round again

What is the width of those disks and what make are they??

I measured the disks with my vernier, and they are 12mm thick, they also have a wear indicator that says they shouldn't go less than 10mm. The disks are by Topran, made in Germany - sold by Goldwagen at around R 155 each

With no specific intention of yours truly, HW2 is turning into a very near clone of HW1... Yesterday I found a set of aluminium spacers for the rear wheels, which will push them out more than an inch per side for that 'horny bulldog' look. Is it only me, or do I get a weird feeling of deja vu?

Unfortunately I had to make a very important decision this morning, that might slow down HW2's progress a bit. Actually a lot. Those few who have an idea (because I told you), please forever hold your peace for the time being?
