Pine ,why not have an adaptor made up that gives you a very narrow wheel track, that the smaller diameter just covers the wheel nuts and then widens out to 205 PCD,i think i need a drawing to explain ???

I think I am with you, Bob - the problem being the Golf front calliper, even with an 'inward-dish' adapter, it won't clear it.

Installed the tie-rod ends today, but still need a LH side one with the hole for the steering damper. Spent half a day looking for the nuts used to 'lock' the tie-rod end on the tie-rod - and eventually found them neatly stacked away in a box in a drawer - after turning the whole store room and working space over

Lesson learned no 345693: mark removed parts clearly when taking them off.... but make a note where you put 'em as well!

Update Saturday 18/07/2009

I am a little worried at this stage. The first target date, namely Ferdie's Swop Meet is no less than 6 weeks from now, and it seems once again that I am not making any progress on HW2

As said earlier in this thread, I want to put the completed chassis, with functioning suspension, engine, brakes and gears shifting on public display on the 30th of August, but there is still a lot that needs to be done!

It will, due to several reasons, not be possible for me to do any work for various of the coming weekends, so I really hope I'll manage to pull this off.

Work (read: day job) is hectic at the moment, and I don't really get to work in the evenings after work - usually tired and gatvol, you know the story - and it is blerrie koud at the moment here in GP.

Haven't had any luck in the past with my Type 1-engined ACVWs with the sump plate fastening thread, and HW2 is no exception - when we put the oil in for the first time at IMPI several weeks ago, I felt that sickening feeling again when you gently try to tighten the sump plate nuts at less than the prescribed torque of only 5ft-lbs, and there is absolutely no resistance on the head of the spanner - yes, the dreaded stripped thread ....and the resulting oil leak because the sump plate doesn't seal evenly everywhere!

So I spent the bigger part of today draining the oil, taking the engine off the gearbox (OK, that was about two minutes), taking the sump plate off and replacing the 6 studs that hold it in place with M6 bolts, and small lock nuts on the inside of the engine. Easier said than done. I thought it was easier to work sideways on the engine than upwards, but I had to take great care not to drop one of the nuts inside the engine. I also had to bend the head of a 10mm ring spanner at a sharp angle, and clamp

Once the lock nuts were... well, LOCKED on the inside, I cut the heads of the bolts on the outside off with an angle grinder, cleaned the threads, and put the sump plate back on with a new gasket set. The tightening nuts went on perfectly, and was able to hold the sump plate in place, at last!!

I would, however, like to put a nice aluminium sump plate on the engine at a later stage - who knows, perhaps even a deep sump kit. But that will be later. MUCH later...

The thing is, once you get your hands oily, and you are really sukkeling and swearing (as I was today ) - the taking of pics are the last thing on you mind.

If you assemble something now in haste and its wrong, it will bug you forever.

When you are assembling for a date, the build losses the enjoyment and becomes a slog.
