As mentioned a while ago, the bumpers were taken to be rechromed. Unfortunately, once the old chrome was chemically stripped from the old bumpers, there was just about nothing left to rechrome! Can anyone say Swiss Cheese ?

Fortunately, our resident Pic hoarder and purveyor of all things Type 3, had a spare set of Bumpers for sale.

I might take them in to be rechromed as well, but they are actually in very good shape.





Yesterday, I also started getting some very encouraging pictures from Bugoff.

Some more cancer has been removed ! We are now down to the last part of the car - the rear, BUT, this is also the most intricate and most rotten part. Work will thus be painstakingly slow.

The fasty rear is also different to the notch, so it's not just a relatively simple cut and weld solution. This requires some serious work and skill.

GREAT WORK AS ALWAYS

The colour scheme I decided on for the interior, was tan and white.

Tan seats with white piping, white roof and door pillars, and black carpets.

We chose a softer tan vinyl that felt a bit thicker and higher quality than the usual, a bit like a well treated leather.

Unfortunately genuine leather will have to wait till I restore a Porsche 356 one day. Crazy expensive!

The upholsterer has completed all the seats already, so here is a sneak preview:



Those of you who have been following this thread from the beginning, will no doubt wonder what happened to the SLR bucket seats ? Ferdi and I have a plan with them, but that will be revealed in good time

Nice work! If this was a Beetle with rusted heater channels, it would have been stripped for spares already

thanks guys, i really am trying to do a good job. dont have much skill yet, just trying to do it the right way first time. my only problem is the work area ive got. will sort that out asap.

Damn that is looking so good already!
I was there when we delivered the notch to Ferdi and I wish I knew then how little of the car we needed to cart over to his house.
Did not need the car trailer, a little Ventertjie would have been enough.
Ferdi, if you ever think of being a teacher, let me know. I would love to be able to do what you do and if half as good, it would be a GREAT start. Well done.

thanks majik, youre welcome to come around any time and have a look what and how im doing it. i really dont have that much experience yet and learn as i go. i think if you understand the basic principle, and got the tools, any one can do this. i did alot of research on the net and then just started experimenting. i would ideally like to go to one of barrys metalmeets or even for one of the courses hes planning to learn from the real metal king.

I was really worried when Ferdi took the rear fenders off and we discovered this! :



So after that was cut out and the fibreglass removed, we get to the BEFORE picture:




Now you see why I said there was only fresh air!

hi there karma, i know i said im gonna finish the welding this weekend, but i had a good look at the doors this morning when i got home. well theyre gonna need some major surgery. they didnt look too bad at first, but when i inspected them from inside i saw there is a whole lot of cancer there. covered up by lots of fg and putty. its not terminal, but it will take loads of chemo to get them good again. will send you some pics as soon as im finished with the rear.

I say again, people using fibreglass to "fix" cars.... Should be shot!

Pity about the doors (and the extra work), but that just means MORE PICS for us all to sit and wonder at ! So it's not all bad.
