long term project German look aka BENZIN

Post by IMPI »

I have been dreaming of a German look bug for a very long time and even had a soft core one a while back still unsure whether selling it was a good idea.
I bought a 1302 heap from Pine a while back is a seriously complicated transaction and eventually decided it was too far gone to warrant rebuilding. The search was on for a better body Pine posted a sad looking 1303 on the forum and eventually it ended up at Volkspares sans chassis
Pierre brokered a deal (hy is nogal goed met deals...)and the shell ended up in my back yard.
I decided to start collecting parts and here is a few of what I have found so far.
My oldest was kind enough to drag everything from hiding

Image
the 944 setup includes a rear anti roll bar and fits into the stock 1303 chassis
Image
Image
Image
Plan for the seats is red vinyl with red harnesses
Image
Found a NOS. apron from Ernst
Image
Early passats and late 1303 beetles shared the same rack (LOL) I still need dimensions for the mounting brackets though
Image
Naturally for a type four the badge should have a 4
Image
another deal his Wife did not like the shifter
Image
Dash will be modified 911 style and I like the understated looks of the SP wheel
Image
944 (83 to 85) brakes bolt on to late 1303s
Image
cooler will be in the front underneath the apron
Image
My eldest stripped about a millimeter worth of paint off the car and we found some acident damage but not much rust
Image
I still need quite a bit of kit and will be adding as I find

Armand, with your previous experience (silver german look, type 3, type 4 turbo) I know this project will be MEAN.

Now here is a project I am going to watch closely. Can't believe how many porsche parts are bolt-on.
Impi, isn't it cheaper to build two of the same while you are at it :-) ?

I'll start looking for that 1303 body so long

Uhm...more of a 'scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' deal I'd say - as there weren't any 'buying' involved?

But yes, looks were indeed deceiving and the 1302 was a HUGE disappointment. HW2, say hello to your IRS 'box & Porsche gauges and Sarel - I present to your Bug's sunroof...

Bestaluck with the build, IMPI! :hangloose:

Now that's a great base car to start with......like the sunroof!

Now bolt on some earlier venders and bumpers....change the boot lid....I'm getting excited :D

Found another few parts for the car.
As the oil cooler is to live under the nose I needed an apron with vents.
I aim to replace all suspension bushes etc with new and will only then considder aftermarket as I am not a fan of urethane I would rather make bushes from vesconite if need be

I decided to treat myself to some work on the car an decided to fit the steering rack as it is one of the areas I dreaded (surfing the net netted very little info except that it was possible to fit a Passat rack.

lloking at Phots yielded an approximate position and some 100 by 50 square tubing was used to make the brackets. I also had to cut the body open in order to ad captive nuts

Nice job, looks perfectly fit and close to the pan. I'm guessing you aren't going to low otherwise the rack might hit the ground?

The rack is positioned as close to the std late beetle position as I could judging from Photos It is als actually above the tunnel so wont be the lowest point in the car I will be lowering the car but it will not be a "pan scraper" handling and very little bump steer is the ultimate aim.
