Welcome to my Engine build thread

Hopefully my parts payment went through today, in which case here is what i'm getting...

Engel 110
90.5 pots + pistons +rings
40X35 heads with SS valves and Single hi rev springs
Scat Crank 69mm (counter balanced)
Rear Main seal R50
High Ratio Rockers 1:25 lift
Cam lifters
Gasket set
36HP Shroud (Without dog house cooler, I’m running a new external oil cooler and it is working like a dream. Themoswitch kicks the fan in at 80 degrees( inlet Temp), I have pressure even after a 145km/h highway run)
Cylinder cool tin
Dual thrust bearings for cam


Will still need:
OG tinware for twin port.
Mains bearings
Possibly welded Race fan
Crank breather kit
New jets for my carbs
one new electric choke for solex 32/34 carb (left hand side)


Still need to do:
Machine case
Machine Heads to 8:1 CR
Weld case by No 3 cylinder
Lighten flywheel (maybe)

Plus other bits and pieces

PS, if you wondering about the name, This engine is going to be black, the case, the heads, the tin ware, the alternator, the works its going to be a highway cruiser so want it to run nice and cool for prolonged runs at 130km/h or 140km/h
And No, not gloss black, Flat or Satin...

I already have my box back from Bugger with a longer 4th, Front Disc conversion from Calooker and now waiting for parts.

After this, look out for my next build thread... it might entail metallic Charcoal gray paint and my SP...

pictures will follow as i get parts and make progress...

Ok, got most of my parts for the build, time to start having the Machining done. Big Thanks to Rui for getting the stuff for me! Hopefully have the bug all sorted for the 75th party later this year!

Heads are 40 inlets, 35 outlets

Update time seeing that the forum is so slow at the moment.

Everything went in to be machined. Should have my engine sorted and finished in 2 weeks. Opted to have it put together by the guy that is doing the machining, i just dont have the time at the moment and i'm too scared i screw something up by accident again. seems to be a decent chap. Will put all his details up once i get my engine back or on request. He specializes in VW aircooled engines. Name is Bruce Cronk.

Going to be running a compression ratio of 8.5:1. Also a mild port and polish in the lines. And lightened Flywheel is a YES...

Need to find jets for my carbs and nice twin port tin ASAP now...

Lightened flywheel is good for acceleration, but dont og and try and tow a trailer/caravan up hill

Actually, a lightened flywheel is good for throttle response when the clutch is in. I.e. you are standing on the line, you can blip the throttle and your revs do what you want really quickly, or you are changing gears, or you are impressing the hobo begging next to you at the traffic light.

But when you let the clutch out, it all returns to normal and the few grams you have taken off the flywheel are negated by the transmission, car, caravan and boat trailer weight that is now attached to the engine through the clutch.

The coolest about a lightened flywheel is the fact that when you turn off the ignition, the engine, like, stops, like, immediately. It doesn't slow down and stop, it just stops.

Picked up a new ally pulley, mine is knackered after the flywheel coming off incident (dont ask what happened with the pulley, i dont even know)

Also got a new VDO Oil temp gauge and sender - only R490 in total, not too bad! was expecting 800 atleast.

So my list of instruments so far:

if i had more space on my dash i would get the exhaust pyrometer and Cylinder head temp gauges as well. *sigh*

Also got the new old tin, need to clean it up and get it powder coated soon!

wanted a rear section cut off an old wrecked beetle but there were none at Volkspares PTA and i could not bring myself to having a decent Beetle body cut just for my modifications i want to do.

Why not add the extra guages below the ashtray or indicator area, extra guages= extra kw
Why exactly did you want the rear of a beetle again?

I'm aiming at about 70+ kw, so i dont think extra gauges are gonna help that guy they wont work under the ashtray, my Xplode is sitting down there...
I wanted the rear so i can weld the exhaust holes up and modify my car to have a removable rear so engine in and out is easy. Bumper off, rear off and engine out. No more jack up car and swearing and wriggling around...

Ok, so there is a little thing called Emissivity, the Wiki definition is right and is as such -

The emissivity of a material (usually written ε or e) is the relative ability of its surface to emit energy by radiation. It is the ratio of energy radiated by a particular material to energy radiated by a black body at the same temperature. It is a measure of a material's ability to radiate absorbed energy. A true black body would have an ε=1 while any real object would have ε<1. Emissivity is a dimensionless quantity, so it does not have units.

In general, the duller and blacker a material is, the closer its emissivity is to 1. The more reflective a material is, the lower its emissivity

So what i'm getting at is paint your block or anodize your block (and heads) and lose alot more heat than a nice shiney metal surfaced stock block!

Lol well you do have the SP stripes right? So that's the extra kw there. Lol.

Ah awesome idea,was thinking it had something to do with engine removal. But check around there are deff.front fooked bugs you could butcher.
And yup painted block is a drag racers trick, that and heat wrap around the cylinders, I have/had a single wrap around mine. Wonder if its still there.

Going to carbon tape wrap my exhaust, almost like TonyZ's. My uncle found a shop that sells the stuff the Helicopter guys wrap their exhausts with. That will also lower engine bay Temp...

Wrap my oil filter as well come to think of it...

why wrap your oil filter? Its a good spot to get extra oil cooling, plus that shiv will come off in chunks when you remove the filter.
