Bug Aircon
Hey guys.
Has anyone seen these aircon units? if so, hows about some background info. Saw this article at this link http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2411437/1 ... gen-beetle and was wondering how many of these there are around. would be awesome to get a unit for my bug resto.

Re: Bug Aircon
Will be a schweet mod. But what about additional strain on the already taxed engine??

More than meets the eye!

best air con solution is do a subaru conversion first!
LOL
Seriously though I have seen a couple in Australia . The modern rotary compressors are they way to go they are much more efficient and less taxing to your donk. . Mitchell

Re: Bug Aircon
I don't think aircon on an ACVW will be very successful. The 1600 ACVW cooling system was marginal and power output doesn't exactly leave a huge reserve for compressors and such. There's a reason why you don't see aircons on ACVWs in SA.
Think about it, in HOT weather (when your engine is already struggling to keep cool), you want to add more strain on the engine (ie, more heat generated), as well as a whole lot of extra stuff that needs cooling under there. Sounds like a recipe for short engine life to me ...

Re: Bug Aircon
Good point fig, I didnt think about that. I see in the article the guy says
Louis, if i find 1 il let you know...
Why would the drivers side condenser have a fan on it and not the passenger side. It seems a lot of people wouldn't mind getting their hands on a unit like that. Do you think if you built an power plant with a large sump it would help with cooling if it has an aircon unit to drive. These are the two condenser coils for the air conditioning system. They are located underneath the car, on either side of the transaxle. The one on the driver's side has a 6 volt electric fan to assist w/dissipating heat.

Re: Bug Aircon
Very true what FIG said......
But he forgot to add that VW foresaw this problem,
.
.
and built in a " LEDD" Air conditioner system,
.
.
.
"Low Energy Draining Device" to cool the car without over heating the engine.
.
.
.
All Vw's have had these systems included into the build, since the development of this unit.
..
.
.
Can not remember as from which year this was included.
.
.
.
But should you look at your Drivers manual, you should be able to pick it out.
.
.
.
Also have an instruction on how to use it.
.
.
.
Just look in the index under...
.
.
.
.
"WINDOW" .
Hope this helps

Re: Bug Aircon
I never get hot in my bus,.....only when im standing still, the wind pumps through the vent windows and through what I like to call the ram air air conditioniong duct of fury that busses came out with.
But like all good things,it comes at a cost,I have to hold the window open with my hand, which leaves me with the strangest trucker tan you have ever seen!

Re: Bug Aircon
at a guess the one without the fan is the condenser and the one with the fan is possibly the evaporator....65beetle wrote:These are the two condenser coils for the air conditioning system. Re: Bug Aircon
Think both units next to the transaxle are condensers. With 6V and only around 180W of generator power they probably only had enough power for a fan on one condenser. Two would have been better. Remember that the evaporator under the dash also has a fan, and the clutch on the compressor has a solenoid that also needs power.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
