Re: Questions-Questions
If the CJ on the engine number is anything to go by, then 2000.

Re: Questions-Questions
The photo of the "engine Number" you showed, is not your engine number, that is the number on the fan housing.
If the fan housing is original, the the engine number and this number will be the same, BUT over the years guys have changed and swopped fan covers, so for your TRUE engine number look over the fan housing onto the split line of your engine block.
THAT is your engine number.
If they the same, then you lucky, if not, you may have
at police clearance, that is if the cop knows his type 4 engines.

NO ....One of the best engines made by VW, by this time, all the bugs where (almost) worked out and you have, one of the bigger, better, beautiful engines.
You say you have a bearing knock, is that by sound, or have you tested the play in the bearings. ?/
You may have Hydraulic valve lifter, these make a noise like Bearings. Most Type 4 engines can be done up from the pistons up, because the bearings last so long, and seldom need replacing when the engine is done up.
Service your carb's, and change your oil & filter every 10000 Km, and you have an engine for life.

Re: Questions-Questions
Ok, this is the situation,
I heard a noise in my engine, drove straight home and parked. Thought it to be a bearing knock. Then proceeded and got another engine which I was told had a problem with 1 of the heads. This motor does not have a flywheel either. So the plan is/was to remove the heads and flywheel from my engine and fit it to the other motor and fit that motor to my bus. I decided to find out what was the problem with my motor and started stripping today, I found that it doesnt have a bearing knock. The noise I heard comes from the alluminium gear on the front of the camshaft. The pins(?) holding that gear to the camshaft tore out and left only 1 holding the whole thing together. My plan now is to get a quote on getting my motor repaired, I would rather have my original motor in my bus than another 1 that I have to take for clearance.
Please guys whereto from here.

Re: Questions-Questions
I would say get a stock cam and a stock oil pump, then slap it all back together with new bearings and rings. Make sure you can put it together yourself and have the right tools for the torque settings....

Re: Questions-Questions
x 2.5 what Tony said.
If you do not have the right tools, take it to someone that does. will be well worth the few cants.
Let him set your end play at the same time, and run the motor as is.
You can always play with the spare engine, as and when you have time (read Money) as there will be no urgency.

Re: Questions-Questions
Check the valve seats in the heads you plan to use.

Re: Questions-Questions
at a minimum you should replace all the valves with new
I would look closely at your valve seats, it looks like some exhaust valves are lower than others. Maybe they are sinking in because the seat is wearing. Maybe the other seats are busy coming out. maybe it was just poorly done work if they were replaced previously. If I were you, I'd consider new valve seats too.

rather worry now while you can do something about it than worry later when its all back together.
