OK so not much is happening, at this moment, my sole aim is to get the papers sorted out for the motor and the body.

Also getting all the parts together that I still need.

Always believed that one should have all the parts ready when doing a project, else it will die due to delays.

Still waiting for the Carb. kit, and the 6v starter, then we should have it all.

Been thinking......... should do a DOUBLE resto, with both beetles at the same time.

Now I hear a mumble that the brown beetle looks fine, but I am not Happy with it.

Want all my Aircooleds to be to the standard of the Fastback.

Your comments would be appreciated, but here is my thinking.

As the Oval is more Scarce, it should be restored to NEAR Original, and all the non-standard parts fitted into the Brown 59.

The only NON-STANDARD on the Oval will be the Paint job, as this can be changed any time again in the future.

The 59 will be changed from its drab brown colour, to something fun, and have the 1600 motor, easy seats, disk brakes, and ... and... but still in keeping of a standard VW.

Well that the plan, for now,

Retrovans 1956 Oval Beetle

Since she has been standing for over a year, with no work done on her, as all the attention went into the Fugly, , the :bn: paint work has come to a fore, rust popping out all over, this is a FULL RESTO.

We will have to undress this old lady  down to the skin, and scrub off the filth and invest in a fine quality coat.

This Lady will be readied for the Grand George Ball of 2014.

No, she will not be a Trailer queen, trailer trash or any other form of dragged along exhibition.

A fair Lady as she will be, can only arrive driven by a pumpkin and become Queen of the Ball. :D

So step one, Paper Work........ :puterwork:

Well as our old lady was engine-less, on arrival, I have been on the hunt for a complete engine for her.

You may recall, on a earlier post, that I have a 1200 motor with 6v all. Well I still have it, and will be holding on to it for originality, but till then, I want to drive this here beauty.

Got a 2nd hand motor from a good friend, and decided to test the mechanics of the old girl before the strip-down.

Thought it was going to be an easy slip-in, test and run........

Would seam the engine was a Baywindow bus motor, with a large flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch.

Should have looked before installing, well,... out it came, and an grinding day on the bell-housing followed.

Having learn't from the Fugly bell-housing-grinding-issue, I sprayed the inside with black matt paint, before fitting so as to mark all touch points that would have to be attended too for the 2nd time. No need, it slipped in perfect with out a scrap.

You have to remember. This is only a dress rehearsal, to test all mechanical parts, make a list of all problem parts, and repair/refurbish to new all parts at the same time, as we go along. This will allow me to work on all parts at the same time, and not have a hell of a surprise at the end. the motor will be heading to Villiersdorp as all my other , soon.

So now being in without the exhaust, and remembering that she has her full skirt on, no holes, (for exhaust) we will have to modify the exhaust to fit with the outlet on the one side. As I already have a brand new GT2 TIp Exhaust, which I will be modifying to a single outlet, "why !!" You all ask, well, because I love the GT2 exhaust, gives nice performance on a stock engine, has a good sound, and fits well.

Also needed will be the mandatory 10 mm spacer, and 2lt starter.

So, will she start, and let me drive her, to see if all else works ?????????

Will let you know.

OK, so not a world moving amount of progress, but a move in the right direction none the less..

Here is the 2nd hand engine in for the mock-up, and test run, should I get it running..

Image

Then I have the new Bus starter, seams to be a Lucas, at a excellent price.

Image

Now most of you know what the GT 2 TIP exhaust looks like, well here is a pic of one.

Image

But as this will not fit under the skirt of the Oval, as it has no cut-outs for the pea shooter pipes, I had to modify my new GT 2 TIP, so that it will fit without being obtrusive.
Well here is what I done,

Image

Image

She fits beautiful without sticking out or touching any body work.

quit proud of my work I am.

Will be fitting the new "J" pipes as well, when I get them, and still need to turn me a 10 mm spacer for that there new starter.

New bush is in the box, and ready for fitting.

Till then

You dont need that starter as the engine you fitting is a Beetle bus engine if I understand correct the oval had a smaller belhousing so it needed slight clearance for the engine to go in
If the clutch setup is 200mm then you use normal beetle starter
If the clutch setup is 228 then you need the 2L starter and spacer and the chances that you got a beetle motor with 228mm clutch is very unlikely
Adapterplates Available for Rotary in Beetle and others aswell
