Thanks for the picture Cyndi, great looking bus can see you are going to have lots of fun working on her and even more fun when she's running.

We passed up a green bus like yours about a year ago due to lots of bad workmanship, all though I really wanted it due to all the windows and barn doors.

Well tomorrow could see some real excitement or dissapointment. My dad worked on the bumpers, their brackets and the front grill for 4 days and in the morning they are going for powder coating. We've checked the net and although it seems possible to do, a lot of people wouldn't attempt it. We are going to take the chance. we'll see if the putty work holds up and if the powder coating will take.

What a great project. Overall it looks to be in pretty good nick.

For the sake of your dad's sanity I sincerely hope that the powder coating works, otherwise he may be in for another four days stripping and re-prepping. Powder coating is electrostatically bonded to the metal, so in theory it shouldn't stick to any body filler. If it does somehow take there is a very good chance that when it is baked it will form air pockets under the coating, which could lead to it cracking and breaking off. With time powder coating will also become brittle and porous when exposed to the sun's UV rays.

To be brutally honest, I would stay far away from powder coating and rather have the bumpers sprayed with a nice, durable 2K paint. An elastomeric additive can be added to the paint if you're worried about stone chipping. To quote a guy that I used to deal with that did all our metal work, "powder coating is a cheap-s**t industrial process for coating shelf racks in shops".

I don't mean to be a buzz-kill, I just want you to get the best result you can, based on past experience.

Too late. Things already at powder coating. Didn't work out. Putty bubbled. Are busy resanding and will try again on Monday.
If we have a problem again we will remove all traces of putty and try to braise fill the dents. Posting pics to show damage.

Tomorrow we are taking the wheels to have the tyres stripped off the rims. Next week we will take the rims to be sand blasted and powder coated.

Now thats not a fair statement....

Do you know that every part that is not plastic, on a Smart Car, is powder coated....

Do you know Mercedes-Benz has fully Power Coated car's in all continents and all whether, on trial for future implementation...

Do you know that every BMW is powder coated, even if only the clear coat....

Do you know that every wheel made for OEM is powder coated...

Do you know that every wiper blade for OEM is powder coated...

Did you know that all high production Trailers are seam sealed with sealer, and powder coated on top of it....

Do you know that most Army equipment is powder coated....

No the problem does not lie with the Powder coating, but with the Powder Coater.

Same as you do not get bad Kids, only bad parents.

If your surface is properly prepared, you can powder coat near every thing.

I have not only coated steel,but plastic, wood, and glass, in fact, most Coke bottle handles you see on Coke fridges was done with my machines and Powder.

I sprayed the Water bottles for the Blue Train.

And Powder Coated a Grand Piano to showroom gloss.

No it can be done and done better then wet paint, if not sure about the substrate and what is on it, such as old paint, body putty, or sealer, all the Coater has to do is bake the part in the cure oven at a slightly higher temp. to "kill" the moisture, and gasses, then powder coat as normal.

In the case of Cyndii's bumper, all the now have to do, is flat it, to get the bumps and blisters out, re-powder coat it, but bake it at a lower temp.
Can supply your coater powder that will cure at 160 Deg. C

We took the wheels in today and had the tyres removed from the rims. The rims will be sand blasted next week and then powder coated.

Thanks for the info Herman, powder coating is certainly getting more advanced. I didn't mean to be rude; I was merely quoting an old supplier of mine. I've also used powder coating on various parts with great success, but I've also had a lot of misses; as you say it is entirely dependant on the people doing the application (bad kids - bad parents).
My point of view is influenced by a lot of "restorations" I've seen done in the classic motorcycle scene, where guys have powder coated their entire bikes; and they look terrible and often don't last very long. This is quite possibly down to poor quality powder/ application, but either way the work done was far from satisfactory.

Cyndi, I truly hope that the bumpers work out; your bus is going to be epic when it's all shiny again (me like shiny). Keep up the good work.

Just a question from my side, I think this one is for Herman as he makes out about powder coating - Cindy said in a previous post here that they might try and braise fill the dents, now this will work but it made me think of the old school lead filling of dents, will you be able to powder coat succesfully over lead work like that?

Yes on both counts, you can powder coat over all soft metals as well as some plastics, so yes, that will work..

Hi all.

Well we tried again today and it went so much better. It wasn't as good as we wanted and so we are going to take it right down to bare metal again, coat it and decide from there. This might only happen next week now because of exams and dad also has to try and earn a living.
Rims are at the sandblaster and hopefully they will be coated later this week. will post pics of those when they return.
Today my dad's book arrived. I guess we will pull the engine out shortly. It's only firing on 3 cylinders.
Pics of that as well as soon as we do it.
