info needed on a 50s beetle :helpme:

Post by 57oval »

hi guys. i was wondering... does a beetle (60-66) front fenders and front bonnet fit onto a 50s beetle? or is the shape totally different? and a friend told me that the 70s rear fenders fit on the 50s, just the tail lights are diff?
im struggling to find 50s body panels :( so if these models do work on my beetle, i dont mind fitting them on

Seam to recall that besides the change in number of holes, and location of holes, the fenders and hood where interchangeable.

Incorrect holes are easy to weld up and new ones drilled.

57oval,
I will check things out for you. - Thanks Paul
I know that the 70's lids will need a change of the valance and therefore the front bonnet will have a different curve as it points to the road. The 70's engine lid as far as I know is a lot wider so I would keep away from them.
The Doors on pre 65 will fit 50's but the pattern on the inside of the door differ slightly, if it worries you. But all the bits, window winder door lever etc work.
The fenders of a pre 65 will fit the 50's. but let me cross check for you.
I can also suggest is get onto the parts suppliers like http://www.wolfsbergwest.com and look at the fenders, they normally give year ranges eg. 50's to 64 etc.. I know that certain things are not what suppliers say especially the battery section, they say fits up to 72 but the pattern is different, same with jacking points...
I will get back to you.

Ok so here's the scoop. I have checked the fitting with 72 fenders and the mounting holes match up as does the slope of the valance in the front and back. As far as I could see the only difference is the oval has a fixed protruding mounting bolt rather then the use of bolt as with the rest, on the running board end. The fender piece that extends towards the road at the running board end seemed a little long but I didn't check by mounting (not that type of mounting  ) the running board, but don't think it would be a problem.

So in summary I recon the 60's fender will be a good enough fit.

Let us know.

I have a passenger side fender, unfortunately only the one side.
There's putty on it so don't really know the damage underneath. I'm in CPT, let me know if interested
