'72 Deluxe bus

Hi everyone

I wanted to start this thread for my baywindow that I bought recently . I'm not to clued up with the busses but I've owned a couple of aircooleds before and thought its time for a bus.

Its a original, unpainted, unmolested rustfree lowlight baywindow

And this is when I fetched it on Saturday



So there is 1major issue with the bus..

-I bought the bus without a engine...


What I've done so far is sourcing a engine and some missing or broken parts

I got a engine from Hendrik which I'll be fetching on Saturday

Bought some mirrors today



And fitted them

So I'm looking for some parts..if anyone has or know where I can get

Deluxe trimming/moulding clips
Deluxe bumper rubbers
Middle seat chrome ashtray

That's a very nice colour. Not often you see them in that green. With some nice polishing, that paint will be rejuvenated quite nicely.

What type motor have your purchased?

I found a 2.0 Feul injection type4 engin, and its not realy the right engine for the bus as it originally had a 1700 carburettor engine but I think the bigger capacity will aid in the much needed oomph department

And with the FI, tuning and fuel consumption would be better

I will be rebuilding the engine before it goes in

Type 4 is the nicer motor to have in the baywindow's, the type 1 is pretty pap in the bigger bus.

2.0 Type 4's never had the Bosch D-Jetronic here, only 1700's. Are you sure its a 2000? That fuel injection system wont work properly if its fitted to a 2000L.

I am not 100% sure..I will make sure on Saturday when I fetch the engine..I just did a google search and saw the 2.0 had fi, but if its a 1700 its also good, 1 little step closer to be original

Regarding the paint..I've started polishing it 1 panel at a time

I start off with Shield SP3 compounding paste to remove the oxidation



Then I use Wynn's revive -its a milder oxidation remover-but I use this mostly to remove the swirl marks created by the buffing mashine-I do this by hand



And then finally I use Wynn's Detail to seal the paint and give it a nice shine

Ok so today I got some parts that was needed

First off the black padding behind the drivers seat was broken



Got a almost perfect one



Wil fit it later, together with the steering wheel and pedal rubbers and gearlever boot that I got

Also I got the engine which we confirmed is a 2.0 starting with engine no CU.I got it with all the fuel injection stuff like the harnass, airflow meter, feul pump etc. But noticed that this was a aftermarket fitment into that bus it wasnt a original fi bay

My plans for now is to disassemble the engine for rebuild.I am a qualified mechanic so have more or less a idea of how to go about these aircooled engines and I read up alot about them all the do's and don'ts. But I would appreciate if the guys that really know these engines give me some input on what to do and what to look out for..

I also plan on ditching the Digitronic system and fit a Dictator management just to keep the engine bay neat and so I can fine tune the engine on a dyno.

I got a qoute from volkspares for a Mahle pistons and barrel set-R5500 , if anyone knows where I can get it at a better price please let me know.

My bus also came with 3 stock wheels an 1 merc wheel, so I got 2 stock wheels from Hendrik. Now I have a full set

UPDATE
So I've disassembled the engine I bought...turns out to be a no go.
But I will be using all the tin, Fi system etc of this engine.
I've considered fitting a 2.0 import motor, which I did not really wanted to do but after a day or two of thinking it over I've decided to keep it aircooled.

I got a 1700 case with crank and rods from Aramand .He has offered to help me build a proper reliable 1700 type 4 engine.So as of today I'm just gathering parts for the build. I got the pistons, rings and gasket set today.Ordered the bearings, oil pump and exhaust from Rui

I've also removed the bumpers and will be taking them for sandblasting tomorrow. Then I'll etch prime and repaint them l87 silver white(mix a color close as possible) .
Otherwise im just busy cleaning everthing

I must just get it running for now, but getting hold of 1700 cylinder heads is becoming a major hassle.
