Here in Pretoria there are plenty Military surplus yards with these vehicles

I'm not too sure if a civilian can buy them though
If it's too low, you're too old

Do you have a specific vehicle in mind?

If you do,you go to that regiment and ask for the commanding officer, ask him if the vehicle is redundannt. If it is,get his permission to speak to the person in charge of the car pool, and that person will then point you in the right direction and will also tell you what paper work to do to bid on the vehicle. It is a major schlep, believe me!

There is a guy in my neighbourhood who fixes up all those old military vehicles for sale.

He does :
SAMIL 100'S
SAMIL 50'S MK1 & MK2
SAMIL 20'S MK1 & MK2
BUFFELS

I'm not sure if he does Unimogs but maybe he can supply some info.
Here's his web addy : http://www.jacobsmachines.co.za/

Also there is a yard with military vehicles for sale in Bapsfontein.
If you take the Delmas road out of Pretoria (R50) and drive through Bapsfontein you'll see them on the right hand side just after the BP garage which is on the left.

The SANDF does not have a lot of Unimogs left anymore, mostly ambulances and fire trucks that are still in use. The Buffel, however, was a mine-proof personnel carrier built on a LHD Unimog chassis, with Unimog running gear, engine etc. A lot of Buffels are usually available at military auctions. If you can get hold of one, buy it and throw off the armoured plates. IMPI mentioned recently that he knows a guy in the Klerksdorp area that builds authentic Unimog fibreglass cabs and bodies, specifically for a Buffel chassis.

PS: If you take the N1 North, towards Polokwane, there is a military yard at the Wallmanstahl turnoff. I passed it last week en route to Bela-Bela and saw a Unimog standing there. There is also a military vehicle yard on the R21 between Tembisa and Centurion, which usually have a few 'Mogs.

PPS: Don't underestimate the SAMIL 20, I've seen it go literally ANYWHERE off-road, and if I'm not mistaken it's got an AIR COOLED Magirus Deutz engine!

Apparently that armoured plate would fetch quite a bit at the scrap metal dealers

Those Magirus Deutz engines are bulletproof!

On the N2 Next to the Subaru dealership in Sumerset West in the Cape you will see a range of Samil 20's and a few Unimogs for sale! When i was in the Mag I was a duty driver and a Ratel driver. The Samil 20 is an awsume "little" go any where, do any thing, f#Ck around vehicle! With x 4x4 diff lock that will take you over most sand dunes in Nam. Except of cause Dune7! Which I did try but got bogged down 1/4 way up! had to get a Ratel to pull me out!

Look at buying a Samil 20 as you can still get spares for them and Duetz Diesel Power can service them! 103mm pistons makes for loads of "trek graag!" They are fun to drive, have a soft top and will do 130Km/h. :jumping:

They have a huge load bay and come in a stone chip brown! with enough ground clearance to clear any BlikMetWeile! :shoot: :finger4u: :whip:

Yeah, tough little buggers! The smell of the diesel fumes of a Samil 20 is unique in the world. These pics bring back fond jaag-kak-aan memories of my own days in the 'Force'

SAMIL is an abbreviation for South-African Military. It is a name given to a series of trucks specially designed for the South African army. They are put into weight categories and get the subsequent number behind their names. So we can find the 20, 50 and 100 series. The 20 is the smallest of them all with a load capacity of 2 tonnes.

Construction ran from 1976 till 1991 but the truck came in full service during the border conflict with Namibia in 1980. It still serves with the SANDF (South African National Defence Force)

Their structure can be called rather simple: chassis and cab always stay the same. The rest is added as needed. The Samil 20 can be found as troop carrier, commando, shelter, water truck and even as a weapons platform for a 20mm AA or Milan AT system.

Samils are not mine-protected although some were adapted for it in later stages.
