How do I check bus tranny mounts?

Post by Merlin »

I'm beginning to think the shifting issue in my Fleetline is due to worn tranny mounts...

How do I go about checking this?

Thanks, N.

You'll have to remove the engine. With the engine in the Bus, the weight will make the mounts appear to be OK. Or I suppose you can wedge a crow bar or something between the mounts, and see if you are able to pick up the engine clear from the mounts?

If the rear mounts are vrot it's usually not noticeable unless you have a hot engine and drive it hard. If the front mount is gone you will have difficulty selecting gears and may not be able to find reverse at all. If the front mount is that bad, a visual inspection will probably show that it has ruptured.

I have replaced a front tranny mount without removing engine and trans, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're stuck in the desert or something.

You can change the 3 mountings without taking the Tranny out completely but the engine will have to be out, problem is if the axle boots are a litlle old and britlle they could tear as the Tranny needs to be moved up and back quite a bit.

I don't think my axle boots are too bad, but I haven't been under the bus for quite some time.

Fig,

It shifts into all gears fine, but is a little rough when slotting in...bit of a 'clunk'. I just shift slower and smoother and it helps.

I also refrain from shifting when going over a bump, as it tends to make it worse.

Any other ideas?

N.

Atleast it's only a finger, and not fist-wide as I would imagine yours is, Zero'?

I have to help install an engine into my mate's bus soon, so perhaps we can sort out both at one time. :|

I need Leave...lots, and lots of Leave... :(
