Ja, except that getting the right slave cylinder for it is a pain, I've just imported a set of rear slave cylinders for the Notch, and the brake shoes are made from unobtainium. (Of course you can keep your buggy off the road while you're getting your only set of brake shoes re-lined)

So I would stick to Beetle drums, because they are much easier to get, and you don't need anything more on the back of a buggy than Beetle drums. (Front disc brake conversions are only for people who need to tow trailers down loooooong mountain passes and rear disc brake conversions are for people who are terminally gatvol of adjusting drum brakes, amongst both of which I find myself) Furthermore, it's a bolt off-bolt on conversion, I did it temporarily while waiting for my slave cylinders to arrive. January is the month for the switch back to T3 brakes on the T316.

Problem is, everytime I buy a ACVW, I end up with 4 more of the bastards... Of my 6 VWs, of which 5 are AC, I am currently 50-50... Ghia and Rumours are all disc, Notch and Mini-T are all drums, and the Splittie has discs on the front and drums on the back.

Thankfully the Golf has 4 discs... She's absolutely great to drive btw, good buy, excellent value for money. I'm very pleased with her.

I'm going for Golf disks up front, might consider disks at the rear as well, as long as the handbrake setup is not too tricky. Problem is I'm running Sprintstars with Beetle pcd on all fours, so I'll have to go for adapter plates as well, and the $$$ leaving my piggy bank just get more and more and more

Welcome to the wonderful world of restoring old cars! At least the $$$ leaving your bank is not as much as it would have been if you had to pay for a new car. At least this way you can control the outflow, but when you buy a new car on HP it is k@k en betaal for 60 months.

Update 17/12/2008- One MOTHER of a a bolt

Well as said in my 'Wanted' thread, I managed to source one of the IRS pivot bolts (for free, nogal! ) at Volkspares today, thanks once again Jaco and Sarel. Perhaps this technical drawing will put the whole IRS setup in better perspective -



Now the bolt. I have am pretty sure that it is a VW-only component. It is made from high-tensile steel, and has the following dimensions:

Length: 103mm
Diameter (head): 28mm
Diameter (center): 22mm
Diameter (thread): 14mm, the same as a wheel nut of a Bay Bus
Tool size: 17mm hexagonal (Allen key), the same as the drain and filler plug of a Beetle gearbox



Still don't get it? Let's have a look at it, compared to a Hot Wheels Manx, in order to give you a better idea of the size...
