The 2L 6-rib box was introduced starting with the 76 production year. Called "Type 091. Final drive is 4.57:1 and 4th 0.89.
Box type 002 in "three rib" and "5 rib pyramid shape" version each had different ratios and was used by 1600, 1700, and 1800 bay window.. Threerib 5.375:1 / 0.82 4th for 1600/1700 and 5-rib 4.86:1 /0.89 4th for 1800.
Both stronger than beetle box. Sometimes used in off-road applications like bajas and tube-frame specials.
When 72 Bay was redesigned to accept type 4 engines, the rear torsion tube was re-positioned and rear track widened to increase stability at higher cornering speeds. Think torsion tube could have been moved slightly forward in the process, and trailing arms lengthened, to have more space available for transmission. So not really a case of engine more rearwards, more like box more forwards i think. Exact position of shafts only matters in swing axle applications. Cv joints can efficiently and permanently run at angles.

Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

Re: 2.0l bus transmission, R4.5k, Kimberley
Thanks Dawie,
The reason I ask, is should I fit a 2lt box to say a Split bus body such as say a Fleetline, would the engine be in the correct place or would it stick out towards the back.
This is what i have heard, and not sure if true. As the box cannot go more forward, will the engine have to move back, and by how much.
Thanks
Herman

Hi Herman. AFAIK, yes. Because the baywindow transmissions were longer than Beetle or split bus trannies, if you fit one the engine will stick out at the back. To do a seamless install, you would need to shift the rear torsion beam forwards (about 10cm IIRC), which obviously involves some serious cutting, realignment, fabrication and welding.retrovan wrote:Thanks Dawie,
