Alternator bolt...

Post by Merlin »

's up?

Is there any special trick to removing the big bolt holding the fan onto the alternator?

I don't really fancy standing it on it's nose and clamping it in a vice to stop it turning. :o

I have a Hammerite shroud fan on offer by the way. ;)

Thanks.

No idea what that is, but I'll find someone with one. ;)

I presume it's a similiar idea to an impact driver?

Cheers, N.

Nic, it an air driven 'ratchet gun' that works something like an impact driver (if you want to think about it like that). Alternatively, what they use to do is stick a big screw driver in the pulley assembly and then get that nut off(this is a REAL BITCH on a Fastback with the engine installed in the car!!! ) But REALLY, an impact wrench is the best option :hangloose:

Thanks guys.

I've got a HUGE socket (wheel spanner) here, with a moerse long 'arm' on it...also 36mm.

The alternator is out of the car. I need to fix a section of insulation, want to test fit the new alternator backing plate, and the new fan, hence me trying to remove the old one.

Also want to start polishing it. :D

Will get to it in the next 2 weeks. :)

I always need help getting that nut off the fan.
One person to hold the fan tightly by hand (using a rag to protect their hands) and one person to wack the spanner with a block of wood.

if you do it yourself without an impact gun, the best way to stop the fan turning is to install the pullet into a vice. Put the belt into the pulley, without any shims and clamp the vice onto the belt.
Use this method when putting the fan back on.... but I suspect an impacter is the only way to get the fan off without doing damage or using lots of 4 letter words

Oi, old fart, listen up...do you see the word "chrome" anywhere there? ;)

Be quiet boy, and wait for the finale. ;)

Thanks Zero, but the alternator isn't due to be bolted in for a while, so I want to get the bolt off now. :)

Will try just getting someone to hold the fan - it's being replaced anyway.

If it doesn't work, then I'll try the next one. :) I'm not about to clamp my new pulley belt (Serpentine belt) into a vice. :D

Thanks, N.

yip, guilty as charged.

MTM, you can put the old pulley on to tighten things in the vice and then install your serpentine system when the bolt it tight...

I don't have a spare one.

Sold the old engine turnkey, to a mate.

Calooker's putting my new one together.

Will try Zero's first idea, and if it fails, will drop a line to Calooker. :)

Thanks, N.
