My Westy, a '70 model has a brake booster but I can see it's been fitted by someone else. The reservoir also sits behind the drivers seat on the separation wall. Maybe that is the clue?

It’s brakes are surprisingly good. It’s a 1971 model, which I know as standard to have disk brakes upfront, but no booster. This bus does have a booster which is odd. It doesn’t appear to be fitted later either. All seems perfectly original down to every hose fitting, brake balancer etc, but it’s not the same as a usual late model either, it is something unique. I wonder if a booster wasn’t an optional extra back then?

AFAIK, boosters were standard on microbuses and deluxes from 1971 model year; optional on kombis, panelvans and pick-ups.

My microbus-based 1971 high-roof camper has factory booster, while my 1971 double cab and single cab have no booster.

This is strange. I have another 1971 Deluxe, 1971 microbus and a 1972 microbus and all 3 have disk brakes with no booster.

I guess that means boosters were optional on 1971 and maybe later buses.

While my boosted 1971 microbus has very sharp brakes, the lack of a booster on my 1971 single cab and double cab is not missed. Brakes are still very sharp, but need a bit more leg to get the same braking effort.

Could be that they upgraded the brakes when they did the engine conversion , if
you do a conversion with much more power than the original engine it would make sense to
upgrade the braking system as well

Could be, mine was a v6 upgrade at one point as well. Now stock!
